Biography of Sobko

Sobko personally installed mines, cleared the minefield, made two mine passes. Sobko with his branch was given to the advancing units of the Rifle Regiment. With his actions, he carried away his subordinates to fulfill the combat mission, which contributed to the success of our troops.
Sobko skillfully organized the work of his department. Personally, under the enemy fire, he made two passes in a wire fence. A personal example inspired the fighters to fulfill the combat mission. During the battles for the city of Sumy Ukraine, the junior sergeant M. Sobko received a combat mission to make a passage in the minefield and the enemy wire fence. Having covertly made his way to enemy positions, he took off for more than 20 minutes.
When making a passage in a wire fence, he was seen by an adversary who opened an intensive fire along the sapper. Having determined that it is not possible to make the passage further, he blew the wire rows with an elongated charge. Our infantry approached the formed wide passage, but was forced to lay under the fire of a machine gun. Then the junior sergeant M.
Sobko moved forward and grenades destroyed the enemy’s firing point. He was the first to rush into enemy trenches, carrying the fighters behind him. The enemy was forced to retreat, mining roads and bridges. Over the next days, the junior sergeant M. Sobko removed more different mines than ensured the promotion of our troops on a site of kilometers. When crossing the Desna River for more than 20 hours, he was in cold water, participating in the construction of the bridge.
When forcing the division of the Dnieper River in the area of the city of Vyshgorod, Kiev region of Ukraine, the junior sergeant M. Sobko received the task of pulling the rope over the river. Despite the fact that the enemy fired at both banks of the river with direct fire, began to cross the boat to the opposite bank, unwinding the rope. In shallow water, he jumped out of the boat and pulled it to the shore in his arms.
With his actions, he ensured a ferry crossing. When in one of the flights the ferry was broken and two guns rolled off the flooring of the ferry and sank, dived, hooked one of the guns with a rope and pulled it ashore along with the calculation. By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated November 13, for the successful forcing of the Dnieper River, strong consolidation and expansion of the bridgehead on the western bank of the Dnieper River and the heroism shown to the younger sergeant Sobko Ilyich was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Golden Star medal.
I did not have time to get high awards of my homeland. Sergeant M. Sobko died in battle on May 23. Initially, he was buried in a mass grave in the village of Kosov Tarnopolskaya since August - the Ternopil region of the Ukrainian SSR. He was reburied in the village of Belobozhnitsa, the Chortkovsky district of the Ternopol region of Ukraine. He was awarded the Order of Lenin in the city of Troitsk Chelyabinsk Region.
