Scholkov became a member of the Junan circle, which organized the Leningrad Zoological Institute. Children met with famous zoologists who often attended the occupation of young nature lovers. So Sladkov met the famous writer Vitaly Bianchi, who managed to appreciate his diary. The writer invited a young love fan to himself, to a literary school. Bianchi went with his students on incredibly exciting campaigns, they studied wildlife, animal and herbal world.

It was at that time that Nikolai wrote his first literary works, small stories. Nikolai Scholkov belongs to the generation, whose share of military hardships fell. After the start of the Great Patriotic War, he went to fight as a volunteer, and there his skills and knowledge of the laws of nature were very useful to him. Nikolai Sladkov became a military topographer, was engaged in the study of the area, the search for the safest and shortest ways, and also arranged traps for soldiers of the fascist army.

He fought on the Transcaucasian Front. After the victory, he continued to do what he loves, besides, it very accurately coincided with the writer’s hobby. Nikolai Scholkov had a chance to travel a lot, because it was from every trip that he brought material for his new works. As a rule, he set off alone, and then reflected the results of his campaigns in numerous works.

Scholkov never parted with his faithful assistant - a camera, with the help of which he captured all the most amazing thing that met in his way. Sladkov teaches his little readers to observe nature, gives a description of the holes of animals, their traces and the manner of hunting.
